Το 2020 η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση (ΕΕ) είχε περίπου 159 εκατομμύρια εκτάρια με δάση. Η έκτασή τους έχει αυξηθεί κατά σχεδόν 10% από το 1990 (145 εκατομμύρια εκτάρια).

Σε πέντε κράτη μέλη της ΕΕ, περισσότερο από το ήμισυ της χερσαίας έκτασης καλύφθηκε με δάση: Φιλανδία (66%), Σουηδία (63%), Σλοβενία ​​(61%), Εσθονία (54%) και Λετονία (53%).

Στο άλλο άκρο της κλίμακας, μόνο το 1% περίπου της γης καλύφθηκε με δάσος στη Μάλτα και λιγότερο από το ένα πέμπτο της γης ήταν δάσος στις Κάτω Χώρες (10%), στην Ιρλανδία (11%), στη Δανία (15%) και στην Κύπρο (19%).
